Overview
We refurbished the main hall roof of St Angela’s Ursuline School, a Roman Catholic girls’ school in Forest Gate, London, founded in 1862. The roof had minimal insulation and was suffering from water ingress caused by wind-driven rain. The school also used the roof as a play area, which needed upgrading to meet modern standards.

The Challenge
The existing flat roof was no longer fit for purpose, with inadequate waterproofing and insulation, and pupils continued to use it as an elevated playground. The project required a design that protected the historic building fabric while also providing a safe, functional outdoor sports surface.
Our Solution
Working with Barker Associates, we installed Langley’s Reinforced Bituminous Membrane system. The build-up included:
Graviflex anti-root layer to protect the structure
New insulation to improve thermal efficiency and reduce heating costs
Rubber-based surface layer to provide resilience and protect insulation
Drainage improvements to handle rainwater effectively and safeguard the historic building
We also fabricated and fitted a bespoke safety cage and replaced external access stairs to ensure safe long-term use of the new rooftop play area.
The Results
425m² main hall roof fully waterproofed and insulated
Converted into a modern 4G artificial grass football pitch
Improved thermal performance to meet building regulations
Reduced heating costs for the school
Enhanced safety with new access stairs and safety cage
