Overview
Premier Roofing & Construction completed extensive commercial pitched roofing and leadwork refurbishment at Brighton Arts Museum within the Royal Pavilion estate.
The four-month project included approximately 190m² of slate roofing, 274m² of pitched lead roofing and 80 linear metres of lead box gutters. The building remained open and occupied throughout the works, requiring careful planning within a sensitive heritage setting.

The Challenge
The original roof was in need of replacement, with extensive work required across the slate and lead roof areas.
Access presented one of the main challenges, as the roofing team had to reach sections of the roof through tight box gutters. The historic setting also required careful handling of the existing materials and detailing, while work had to be coordinated around an occupied building.
Timber repairs were required after the roof was opened, with these works completed by the main contractor before the roofing installation could continue.
Our Solution
The slate roof areas were fully stripped before being reslated. Approximately 30% of the roof incorporated reinstated original slates, helping to preserve the building’s historic character, while Welsh Penrhyn Capital slates were used across the remaining areas.
PRC renewed the existing lead roofing and detailing, including approximately 274m² of pitched lead roofing and 80 linear metres of lead box gutters. New Nicholson AirTrak ventilation, Tyvek Supro breathable membrane and guttering were also installed throughout.
The restricted access and heritage environment required careful sequencing and detailed workmanship. The roofing works were coordinated with timber repairs completed by the main contractor, allowing the different roof areas to progress safely while the building remained open and occupied.
